British scientists have developed a computer programme which, they say, can accurately map the mood of the nation and its reaction to events by analysing the emotional content of postings on the Twitter social network. Named Emotive, the programme can scan up to two-thousand tweets a second and rate them for expressions of one of eight human emotions, including anger, disgust, and happiness. The team at Loughborough University say Emotive has a host of applications such as helping police to track real-time threats to public safety or people's reaction to government policy initiatives.
