Paul Martin's Business Update - October 10th

What goes around comes around.

Premier Brad Wall’s announcement of the formation of the Saskatchewan-Asia Advisory Council, a body of prominent business and public sector leaders, to increase trade and investment ties with that region is both a welcomed development and a restoration of links that were abandoned more than a dozen years ago.

Wall, speaking in Asia, announced the new organization as part of his strategy to double the value of exports from this province. And it is reminiscent of the province’s participation in something called the Asia Pacific Foundation, which strengthens ties between the Pacific Rim and Canada and had a strong Saskatchewan flavor. Among its key participants is Len Edwards, a Melfort native who went on to be Canadian Ambassador to Korea and Japan and later the nation’s top diplomat as deputy minister of Foreign Affairs.

Although Saskatchewan dropped its support for the agency during the Romanow years, our reliance on the region as a destination for our goods has never declined, and Wall’s move is a signal that once again we are taking our relationships in the Pacific seriously.
