Paul Martin's Business Update - January 23rd

This province’s commercial sector seems to be operating in a different place than businesses in many parts of the country these days. These are in the less-visible parts of the economy, the areas where there is little interaction with the broad consumer market.

First we saw a big jump in the manufacturing sector and it comes at a time when the wholesale sector is also getting some lift. In the past year, manufacturing sales rose by 20 per cent and wholesale volumes – which are now topping the $2 billion a month level – are up about 17 percentage points. To put this into context, Alberta saw a decline in both these categories from October to November, which is the latest available data.

This correlates quite well with the export figures that we’ve been seeing as well. We’re on track for a record year and sectors such as wholesale and manufacturing are fueling it….given our small population or consumer base, we have no choice to sell our excess inventory abroad. Based on these numbers, we’re doing quite well at it too.
