EMILY INSPIRES! WRITING COMPETITION WINNERS

May 21, 2014, 02:13 PM

In 1913 Suffragette Emily Wilding Davison died from injuries sustained as she tried to pin the Suffragette colours on the King's Horse at The Epsom Derby whilst protesting for 'Votes for Women'. To commemorate the centenary of Emily's death we ran a writing competition as part of Emily Inspires!

We wanted the competition to be inspired by Emily's Northumberland roots & by Kate Willoughby's excellent play 'To Freedom's Cause'. We asked people to imagine the time just after Emily had left her mother's home in Longhorsely to make her way to Epsom & to write from the perspective of either Emily, Emily's mother Margaret or their neighbour, Bob, who is likely to have driven Emily to the station.

We recorded the winners as a single podcast interwoven with a narrative thread.
