999 Calls

Police are urging people to Think First before dialling 999 after experiencing an increase in the number of callers reporting non-urgent matters on the emergency number.

If life is threatened, if people are injured, if offenders are nearby or if immediate action is required then 999 is the number to call.

But in the last month 999 calls to Devon and Cornwall Police have risen by 40% at peak times, the majority of which are non urgent or in some cases reporting matters that are not dealt with by the police.

This is putting the lives of people who need immediate assistance in a real emergency at risk.
