The Irish Voice in the US?

Dec 04, 2012, 08:44 AM

In programme three of Home News this Saturday (8th Dec) at 7.30pm on RTE Radio 1, we're off to New York to drop in on The Irish Voice. Under the stewardship of editor Niall O’Dowd, the newspaper has been a strong voice and advocate for the Irish in America for a quarter of a century. O’Dowd (who also publishes Irish America Magazine) is now focusing more on his online product, www.irishcentral.com, than on his printed offerings. In this episode, we drop in on the Irish Voice's 25th anniversary celebrations in New York and talk to emigrants for whom the paper meant a lot in the 1980s and 1990s. We meet with some hardline Irish republicans who feel the newspaper has abandoned them, hear from one Irish person on the run for over two decades, and speak with Pulitzer Prize winning New York Times journalist Jim Dwyer.
