Paul Martin's Business Update - October 1st

Last week’s update on population figures across the country underscore an important big picture trend gripping this country. The power base in this country is shifting westward.

Over the last three decades, the four western provinces have seen their populations increase nearly 40 per cent. That is more dramatic than any other region and now that we have passed the 1.1 million mark we have become a key contributor to the West’s growing importance in the nation.

The power shift in the country is seen on two fronts. First, a growing population base ultimately leads to increased representation in Parliament, giving the West more clout at the national table.

The second is economic. The West’s strong commercial performance in recent years is well documented and we have seen head offices move from Toronto to centres such as Calgary. And one day, given the West’s growth pace, it is not beyond the realm of possibility that a major bank may move its headquarters to the West in a bid to get closer to the financial action.
