Paul Martin's Business Update - October 29th

There’s a change afoot in the province’s business community.

This year’s ABEX Awards, the annual recognition of commercial excellence sponsored by the provincial Chamber, delivered a story that went beyond the award presentations. It highlighted the changing face of the business community. Simply put – it’s younger.

Normally there are four or five finalists in any category but this year’s Young Entrepreneur competition featured eight contenders who made it through the nomination process to become finalists. Growth and expansion had a half dozen as did the new venture category.

The younger demographic was clearly evident at this year’s event with dozens of tables of young business people among the 800 attendees. They were also joined by a raft of business students – from SIAST and a handful of high schools – as the trend towards entrepreneurship among young people is on the rise.

It may also be a reflection of the fact that the province’s population is growing. As one seasoned business person put it….a dozen years ago my son was in Edmonton, now he’s back here and is now running the enterprise.
