Paul Martin's Business Update - November 6th

The flow of population from one province to another has been big news in this province for decades.

After 25 years of exiting people, especially younger ones, we turned the corner in 2006 and began to see the flow of population move in our favor. It has stayed that way ever since, resulting in the number of residents of Saskatchewan topping 1.1 million.

This is big for a lot of reasons. It offers plenty of fodder for politicians to brag but it is also a foundation piece for economic growth. A bigger population means more housing, stronger retail sales and so on.

With the 2011 census data we can drill down and what we see is that people in the 15 to 24 age category were still mobile as the number of people we lost to Alberta exceeded the number who moved in. But the big change came in the 25 to 54 demographic where we were attracting more people from Alberta than we lost. In fact we had a positive number when compared to every other province.
