Paul Martin's Business Update - November 29th

Political, business and economic commentators spend a lot of time on the topic of employment in this province. The labor market is tilted in favor of those who sell their time – workers – while those who buy that effort – employers – are scrambling to find personnel.

A new look at this subject from the economists of BMO Bank of Montreal have reinforced that notion. They look at this issue from a worker’s perspective, asking where is the best place in Canada to secure employment? They measure it on the basis of job availability, salary or wages and the cost of living including taxation.

The answer is Regina. Actually the West in general is the place to be but when broken down by community, Regina ranks first. Calgary and Edmonton are next and then Saskatoon. In other words, the prairies grab the first four spots. Hamilton is fifth and then Winnipeg.

Inter-provincial migration has been working in our favor for the last six or seven years after decades of exiting people to greener pastures. Now, it turns out, the greenest pasture for a worker is right here.
