Paul Martin's Business Update - December 3rd

This is Giving Tuesday in Canada.

Just like Black Friday and Cyber Monday, it’s a concept that was developed in the US and now has found its way north of the border, promoting the importance of philanthropy. It began in New York and has blossomed as the ‘beginning of the giving season’ where individuals and organizations are encouraged to support charitable causes.

The Canadian program has already attracted more than 1,000 charities, partners and organizations. According to its founders November and December are the biggest months for charitable giving as the holiday season approaches. Plus it’s also the time when people looking to do some tax planning make donations.

You can expect to see local organizations staging events today to mark the arrival of Giving Tuesday in Canada. It is not tied to a single charity or worthy cause, rather it is designed to raise awareness of the idea of giving back.

The latest data available on donations in this province suggest the average adult gives about $300 a year to charities which is at the lower end of the scale nationally.
