Paul Martin's Business Update - December 19th

The province’s population growth is showing no signs of slowing down.

The latest quarterly update on population numbers – a regular estimate prepared by StatsCan – produced an increase of just under 20,000 for the past year and almost 5,700 in the three months under review.

Based on these figures, our population growth actually increasing.

A few years back we had a 12-month stretch that produced 22,000 new residents. The last 12 months were just under that figure but, if we extrapolate the last quarter’s tally, this would be the fastest growth rate yet.

The bulk of the increase is the result of international immigration followed by a significant increase in births compared to deaths. The number of people arriving from other provinces is far more modest. And this is interesting because when this population surge began seven years ago, it was inter-provincial migration that was the big contributor.

Now, Saskatchewan is seen as the place to be by residents of nations around the planet…not just those who were from other parts of Canada.
