Scraponomics Episode 91: Enter the World of Scrap Management

While the economics of scrap-recycling may be a newer concept for some, there’s a lot of industries who have known the value of scrap for a long time. Scrap plays a vital part of the manufacturing, construction, and demolition industries. This is where things can get really exciting, much of which doesn’t even occur at our facility. Enter the world of scrap management.

For example, let’s discuss manufacturers. Scrap material like turnings (which are the shavings left over when making a new product) or stamped coil steel (think of the dough left over when using a cookie cutter, but with metal) are valuable and provide essential reimbursements for the manufacturer to help recoup its costs. Friedland will place steel skids underneath a piece of machinery that we then replace when it’s full of scrap material. Some of our containers even provide us with email notifications indicating when a container needs to be switched soon.

In Friedland’s case, many companies even ask us to help them design their facility so they can maximize the value of the scrap material they anticipate generating. This is probably the most gratifying feeling for us; the idea that we can help a manufacturer function to the best of its ability.

Similarly, when tearing down a building, construction and demolition companies will take the estimated scrap value into account when bidding on the project in the first place. In other words, we’re the reason they can do a job for cheaper than if there were no scrap material involved.

On the surface, this may not seem like it affects you, the consumer, but it does. The less cost a manufacturer incurs, the cheaper they can ultimately make the product for you. Now, that’s scrap management at its finest!
