Scraponomics Episode 112: The Excess After the Holidays

“We may give without loving, but we cannot love without giving.” — Bernard Meltzer, American radio host

The holidays are here! Queue the Peanuts music and gingerbread lattes!

No matter what you celebrate (if you celebrate anything at all), this time of year comes with a mixture of emotions. The gratitude for being with family. The stress of doing the same.

Since it’s largely a gift-giving time of year, there’s a few interesting things to mention about the packaging that gifts tend to come in. After all, once the commotion is over, you may find your house in complete disarray; wrapping paper, cardboard and plastic all over the place.

So what do you do with all the excess?

Well, Friedland can take some of it.

Wrapping paper is a low quality paper that fits in a category we call Mixed Paper. This isn’t paper that we can pay people for, but you can certainly drop it off for free.

The same thing goes for cardboard. Actually, we can weigh your cardboard and pay you for it. However, given that the market is incredibly low, it’s not always worth the time to weigh everything up, so usually people are happy to just drop cardboard off for free as well.

Plastic is a little different. We only take #1 PET, #2 HDPE, and #4 LDPE (shrink wrap). So if you get a pair of headphones that have a #3 plastic package, for example, you may need to check with a company like Granger to see if they can take it. Similarly, Dart Container will take styrofoam, so you may want to check with them for any packaging you get like that.

Lately, though, some packaging contains #4 LDPE air cushions, which we can take!

After giving family gifts this holiday season, consider scrapping the excess with us.

Happy Holidays, from all of us at Friedland!
