Radio is the 800 Pound Gorilla - Two Minute Tuesday - 20160126

There isn’t a week that goes by where I’m not asked about any long term impact of streaming music and satellite radio services on AMFM radio. Here in Kansas City I have not seen much of an impact at all, but I wanted to find out what data was out there. Jacobs Media, the largest radio consultancy in America, recently blogged about a meeting where satellite radio’s SiriusXM’s, CFO, David Frear, spoke about satellite radio and its connection with AMFM radio. He said “terrestrial looks like a very healthy business. But (radio) is overwhelmingly where people who leave our service go.” He went on to say when people tune out satellite radio, they “aren’t going to the streaming players, they’re going back to listen to AM/FM radio…Radio is 800-pound gorilla.” I think there is a paranoia amongst some of my contemporaries that once listeners sample Pandora, SiriusXM, or other shiny, new media music offerings, it’s the end of the road. But it’s not. Jacob’s Media found out that while core radio listeners may be enjoying all sorts of new media outlets, from social to video to web news to music pure-plays, it doesn’t necessarily put a damper on their continued enthusiasm for and use of broadcast radio.
