Northern Ireland's top police officer made a public apology yesterday after an online row in which he told one of his officers to "dry their eyes" and quit the force if they couldn't hack the job. The spat started after Chief Constable George Hamilton posted a message on Twitter inviting people to think about a career in policing. When some serving officers responded to tell him of their struggles with the the pressure of the job, the Chief Constable told them to stop "wallowing in self pity".
