So did Lady Wraxall actually have functions? Oh, well yes they used to have the shooting, ‘cause then Eustace use to come down, this was before Lord Wraxall came back out of the army. Eustace used to come down and then they used to have shoots, employees used to have to do the beating, we used to have to walk through the woods with sticks, beating the pheasants out so that the guns would- so the employees, everybody on the estate would do that would they? - Now Richard, when he came he never had any girl friends but whenever Eustace came to a shoot he was always surrounded by girls. I think he went off to Russia to be a - diplomat. But they used to come down to do the shooting, they used to go in the house obviously to have meals and they probably stayed in the house as well and also down at the Battle Axes, the Battle Axe Hotel was owned by Lord Wraxall. We used to have to go beating and then lunch time we used to get four sandwiches and a bottle of beer and we used to get a day’s wages – where did you eat that? – In one of the lodges or in one of the sheds – Summer Lodge is up at the top – well we wouldn’t have gone there we would have just gone into one of the sheds or something to have our things, everybody. They still had shooting parties in the late fifty’s and in the sixties, they still had shooting parties then. We had three gamekeepers, one gamekeeper was down at lower Charlton, one was over towards the pig farm, and the other one was up at Failand.
