And then there were two. Croatia, the comeback kings, will face France in the final of the 2018 World Cup after overcoming England and Belgium respectively.

France, world champions in 1998, contest their third World Cup final, while Croatia, population four million, are bidding to win the tournament for the first time.

Zlatko Dalic, less than 10 months into the Croatia job, will pit his wits against France’s Didier Deschamps, who is bidding to join Mario Zagallo and Franz Beckenbauer as the only men to have lifted the World Cup as both player and manager.

The stage would seem to be set for Kylian Mbappe. The teenage striker showed against Belgium why many have tipped him as a future Ballon d’Or winner. But Croatia have already proved at this tournament they care little for reputations, and in Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic, have two world-class midfielders who will look to impose their influence at Moscow’s Luzhniki Stadium.

Before that, Belgium, arguably the most entertaining side in Russia throughout the tournament, take on England in the third place play-off.

Steve Luckings and Graham Caygill offer their thoughts and analysis, and give their predictions on who will win the remaining two matches at the 2018 World Cup.

Only four teams remain in the 2018 World Cup, with France and Belgium contesting the first semi-final on Tuesday before Croatia and England face off on Wednesday. Whichever side can win two more games will therefore be crowned champions.

France v Belgium looks set to be a battle of the front three, with Antoine Griezmann, Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Grioud the big threats for France, while Belgium will look to Eden Hazard, Kevin De Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku to guide them to victory.

In the other semi-final, England are expected to continue with what has served them so well in the tournament so far; relying on crosses and set pieces as Harry Kane aims to consolidate his lead in the race to win the golden boot. For Croatia, their hopes will lie predominantly with the superstar midfield pairing of Luka Modric and Ivan Rakitic.

In this Extra Time podcast, Steve Luckings and Jon Turner look ahead to the semi-finals, pick out the key players who could be decisive and discuss the tactics that will be deployed by each side. They also provide their predictions for the final.

This week, Khurram Khan, the former UAE cricket captain, spoke with Assistant Sports Editor Chitrabhanu Kadalayil. Khurramlooked back on his remarkable career three years after he retired from the game.

The Pakistan-born Khurram began by talking about his background and how he made his way from the central city of Multan to glitzy Dubai in the mid-1990s, dreaming of playing international cricket one day.

Cricket fans will recall how Khurram and then-UAE coach Aaqib Javed plotted their team’s qualification for the 2015 World Cup. A long-term employee of Emirates Airlines, he talked about his experience leading the team during those heady days. He also opened up about other highs, and some lows, that made an international career spanning one and a half decades a truly memorable one.

Khurram, 46, also gave his views about the state of the game in the UAE. He credited the Emirates Cricket Board for starting a contract system that helped turn amateur players professional in 2016. But he gave a frank assessment of some developments of which he is not a fan. Listen in.

Even as the Cricket World Cup Qualifier rages on in Zimbabwe, two things are clear: neither the UAE nor Nepal will play in the sport's flagship tournament to be held in England next year, and they are both officially classified as one-day international teams.

While the UAE managed to retain their ODI status, Nepal achieved the landmark for the first time in their history. This is obviously the good news for both sides as it means they will receive much-needed funds from the International Cricket Council, the game's global governing body, to develop the sport in their respective countries.

But as the UAE have learnt over the past four years, that does not guarantee long-term success. There are other challenges that need addressing, one of which is getting them to play more matches and gaining more exposure against the world's elite teams.

In this edition of Extra Time, Assistant Sports Editor Chitrabhanu Kadalayil speaks with staff writer Paul Radley, who was in Zimbabwe to follow the UAE's progress. There are also conversations with UAE coach Dougie Brown and former Nepal captain Binod Das, who provided plenty of insight on the road ahead for their teams.

Also, what do they think about the prospects of a UAE-Nepal series? Listen in.

By Thursday morning we will know the quarter-final line-up for the Uefa Champions League. Four teams are already confirmed: Real Madrid, Juventus, Manchester City and Liverpool – and we may as well add Bayern Munich to that list given that they hold a 5-0 advantage over Beskitas ahead of their last-16 return leg on Wednesday – have their names in the hat, but who will join them?

For Roma, the task of securing a berth in the last eight for the first time since 2008 will mean overcoming a Shakhtar Donetsk side who “play more like a Brazilian team than a Ukrainian one”, according to Eusebio di Francesco. The Italian club trail 2-1 from the first leg as the sides head to Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday.

Manchester United will hope David de Gea is a little less busier than he was at the Sanchez Pizjuan last month when they host Sevilla in the return leg. The Spanish goalkeeper pulled off a string of fine saves to deny Sevilla in that match, with the game at Old Trafford on Tuesday delicately poised at 0-0.

The most eagerly anticipated match of the week though will be played out in Spain as Barcelona take on Chelsea at the Camp Nou.

Star forward Lionel Messi returns after sitting out the weekend’s victory over Malaga to attend the birth of his son Ciro. His goal in the first leg at Stamford Bridge was his first against the English club in nine previous attempts.

With Barca holding the advantage of an away goal, it remains to be seen what line-up Antonio Conte will field against the Spanish league leaders and how he will deploy his own talisman Eden Hazard with Chelsea needing to score at Camp Nou.

European football correspondent Ian Hawkey joins host Steve Luckings on the phone to discuss the respective match-ups.

Their livelihoods are at stake as they fight to keep their status as a one-day international team, thereby ensuring the flow of funds and resources needed to keep building the sport across the Emirates.

The Champions League returns with a bang this week, and no fixture packs a bigger punch than the champions Real Madrid against Paris Saint-Germain at the Bernabeu.

Madrid are looking to win the tournament for a third year in a row, and with the Spanish title beyond them it represents the best chance of silverware for Zinedine Zidane’s side in 2018. The match is heavily billed as the Cristiano Ronaldo versus Neymar show but an intriguing subplot is that of the contrasting fortunes of two French strikers.

Karim Benzema, once the great hope of French football, has recently found himself the target of the Madrid faithful’s ire. With the goals having dried up, Benzema could be forgiven for casting an envious glance at the plaudits being heaped on PSG’s teenage forward Kylian Mbappe, the new darling of French football, a position Benzema must yearn for given his current struggles.

Elsewhere, Tottenham, led by a prolific Harry Kane, travel to Turin to face a Juventus side who have conceded only one goal at home in their last nine games across all competitions.

Manchester City travel to Switzerland to take on Basel in what, on paper at least, looks the mismatch of the last 16. However, St Jakob-Park can be a graveyard for English clubs. Jose Mourinho’s Manchester United lost there in November. Chelsea, Tottenham and Liverpool have been beaten there in the past, as were Alex Ferguson’s United.

Porto v Liverpool features an African all-stars line up. Mohamed Salah, the continent’s reigning player of the year, and fellow winger Sadio Mane will provide the pace on Liverpool’s flanks at the Dragao. Meanwhile, Porto’s attacking trio of Vincent Aboubakar, of Cameroon, Moussa Marega, of Mali, and Yacine Brahimi, of Algeria, have reached 50 goals combined for the Portuguese league leaders.

The 2-2 draw between Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur produced arguably the most dramatic final 10 minutes of Premier League football this season.

A thunderbolt equaliser, two contentious penalty decisions, and two goals in injury-time ensured a breathless end to the game at Anfield. Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp was left raging while defender Virgil van Dijk has all but accused Tottenham players of cheating. It was better news for Spurs' great rivals Arsenal this weekend after a 5-1 thrashing of Everton was inspired by their two January signings. Having let Alexis Sanchez join Manchester United, Arsenal now have two new heroes in Henrikh Mkhitaryan and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. A rare blip from Manchester City saw the league leaders held to a draw at Burnley, and with United beating Huddersfield Town, their lead has been reduced to 13 points.

In this week's Extra Time podcast, host Jon Turner is joined on the phone by Premier League football correspondent Richard Jolly to get his thoughts on the latest action. Richard was at Anfield and Turf Moor and will provide the expert analysis on this week's show.

Well, it took some time, but we’re finally there. Almost. Sort of.

Although Manchester United and Arsenal are yet to officially ratify the transfers of Alexis Sanchez and Henrikh Mkhitaryan respectively, the Chilean forward has been pictured on social media at Old Trafford in full United regalia, wearing the club’s famous No 7 shirt, a number synonymous with great United players down the years from George Best, Bryan Robson, Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo.

Steve Luckings and Graham Caygill discuss the merits of the impending deals and whether Arsene Wenger is deluded when he says he can't understand why any player would want to leave Arsenal.

Also up for discussion:

Manchester City banished the memory of defeat to Liverpool with victory over Newcastle United to maintain their 12-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

Tottenham were foiled in their efforts to snare three points against Southampton in a game that won’t live too long in the memory. Richard Jolly joins on the phone to talk about how a game of missed opportunities was a microcosm in each club's season.

Marco Silva, a wanted man by Everton two months ago, is now no longer wanted by Watford. The Portuguese was sacked at the weekend following defeat to Leicester City. He is replaced by the former Malaga and Rubin Kazan coach Javi Gracia. Will the new man have the same immediate impact as Paul Lambert? The new Stoke City manager endeared himself at the Potteries by overseeing a 2-0 win over Huddersfield in his first game in charge.

Manchester City's magnificent unbeaten run in the Premier League came to an end of Sunday as Liverpool won their titanic tussle 4-3. City manager Pep Guardiola insisted his side were always going to lose at some point and the league leaders are still well on course to win the title. It was another tough weekend for Arsenal who slumped to defeat at Bournemouth. With Alexis Sanchez all but certain to leave the club in the coming days, manager Arsene Wenger is tasked with replacing his best player and getting Arsenal's season back on track. It was a more encouraging round of fixtures for rivals Tottenham Hotspur after thrashing Everton to stay hot on the heels of the top four, while it was another frustrating goalless draw for champions Chelsea. At the other end of the table, Alan Pardew finally celebrated his first win as West Bromwich Albion manager, and West Ham United - led by an unplayable Marko Arnautovic - thrashed Huddersfield Town. In this week's Extra Time podcast, Jon Turner, Steve Luckings and Graham Caygill discuss all the big talking points from the most recent Premier League weekend.

The opening of the January transfer window has already seen a flurry of activity, most notably from Liverpool who welcomed Virgil van Dijk in a record deal for a defender while waving goodbye to Philippe Coutinho with the Brazilian finally joining Barcelona. Chelsea have also been swift to move, landing Ross Barkley from Everton four months after the midfielder initially turned down a move to the Premier League champions. Arsene Wenger faces more questions at Arsenal after their exit from the FA Cup third round, while the futures of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil are no closer to being resolved. There has also been the first managerial sacking of the new year as Mark Hughes departs Stoke City following a sorry first half of the season. Away from the pitch, Chelsea manager Antonio Conte and his Manchester United counterpart -- and Stamford Bridge predecessor -- Jose Mourinho have engaged in an escalating war of words, but over at Manchester City it seems it's business as usual. In this week's Extra Time podcast, Jon Turner, Steve Luckings and Graham Caygill discuss all the big developments from the Premier League and the FA Cup third round.

It was another record-breaking year for football, so what better time than New Year’s Eve to look back over the past 12 months at some of the success stories? If 2017 belonged to one player it was surely Harry Kane. The #Tottenham Hotspur striker smashed Alan Shearer’s 22-year-old record for most #PremierLeague goals in a calendar year, signing off with two hat-tricks against #Burnley and #Southampton respectively. Wayne Rooney broke a record even older than Shearer’s. His superb free kick against #StokeCity last January took him to 250 #ManchesterUnited goals to overtake Bobby Charlton’s mark. He ended his Old Trafford career with more silverware with winner’s medals in the League Cup and Europa League before sealing a return to his boyhood club Everton. We can’t talk about success stories without mentioning Pep Guardiola’s #ManchesterCity. An 18-game winning streak can be extended against #CrystalPalace on Sunday. And if a manager and a team’s success should never be judged too far apart, then Raheem Sterling’s emergence as a match-winner is one of Guardiola’s biggest achievements. It would be remiss of us not to mention #RealMadrid. Bar the Copa del Rey Zinedine Zidane’s side swept all before them in 2017: La Liga, repeat winners of the Champions League, Uefa and Spanish Super Cups -- and they capped it all off in Abu Dhabi by becoming the first team to retain the Fifa Club World Cup in December. Antonio Conte winning the Premier League in his first season at #Chelsea, Mohamed Salah tearing down the house at #Liverpool - join Steve Luckings and Graham Caygill as they look back on this and much more in the year that was in football.

The Mubadala World Tennis Championship enters its 10th edition this week as six of the best players in the world battle it out in Abu Dhabi for the winner-takes-all $250,000 prize. Topping the bill is 12-time grand slam champion Novak Djokovic, who will be making his return to court following a near-six month absence with injury. Joining the Serbian former world No 1 is Dominic Thiem, the world No 5 from Austria, Spaniards Pablo Carreno Busta and Roberto Bautista Agut, US Open finalist Kevin Anderson, and Russian youngster Andrey Rublev. And for the first time, the tournament will host a women's match, featuring none other than American superstar Serena Williams as she looks to gain some court time ahead of her Australian Open title defence next month. Williams, a 23-time grand slam winner, has not played competitively since winning her title in Melbourne - taking the year out to give birth to her first child. She will take on the breakout star of women's tennis in 2017, Latvia's world No 7 and French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko. In a special edition of the Extra Time podcast this week, Jon Turner and Graham Caygill discuss everything to look forward to at the Mubadala World Tennis Championship.

For Tottenham and manager Mauricio Pochettino, the result sees them slide down to seventh, three points behind the coveted fourth place and entry to next season's Uefa Champions League. City's lead at the top stayed at 11 points though, after Manchester United registered a narrow 2-1 win at West Bromwich Albion. Third-placed Chelsea kept pace with United after a single-goal victory over Southampton, while Liverpool's attacking stars were out in force with a 4-0 win at Bournemouth. West Ham United continue to improve under David Moyes -- victory at Stoke City making it seven points from their past three matches to move up to 15th. It's a similar story at Crystal Palace, who under Roy Hodgson have climbed off the bottom of the table to surge to 14th after an impressive win at in-form Leicester City. This week's Extra Time podcast, featuring Jon Turner and Graham Caygill, looks at all these talking points from the latest weekend in the Premier League.

Wembley Stadium continues to haunt Tottenham Hotspur after a draw against manager-less West Bromwich Albion all but ended their faint title hopes. There was better news for their rivals across North London as Arsenal claimed a late - and some would argue, fortuitous, - victory against a Burnley side who continue to impress. It was the Eden Hazard Show at Anfield as Chelsea earned a draw against Liverpool, although another former player proved to be their downfall. Wins both for Manchesters City and United against two teams in their debut seasons in the Premier League, but they were made to work hard for the three points. More misery for Everton who continued their abysmal the season with a thrashing by Southampton at St Mary's Stadium. Meanwhile Marco Silva, Everton's top choice to replace the sacked Ronald Koeman, oversaw another fine result for Watford who brushed aside Newcastle United at St James' Park. This weekend also proved successful for the division's younger players, with a handful making telling contributions. Jon Turner, Steve Luckings and Graham Caygill reflect on the past weekend in the Premier League while football correspondent Richard Jolly joins on the phone to discuss the performances of the two Manchester clubs.

Tony Pulis became the fifth Premier League manager to lose his job this season on Monday after two wins from 12 Premier League games. The Midlands club are now in the market for a replacement who will be tasked with guiding them to safety. David Moyes took charge of his first game as West Ham United manager but a defeat at Watford keeps the London side in the relegation zone. His opposite number on Sunday, Marco Silva, remains Everton's first choice to fill the vacancy left by the sacked Ronald Koeman. Saturday's North London derby offered a reminder of Arsenal's ability to mix it with the division's top teams as Arsene Wenger's side pulled to within one point of fierce rivals Tottenham Hotspur. Meanwhile, a Paul Pogba-inspired win over Newcastle kept Manchester United in second place behind the seemingly unstoppable Manchester City, who stretched their unbeaten start to the season with victory at Leicester City. There were also wins for Liverpool at Anfield - where Mohamed Salah earned himself a club record - and Bournemouth, that saw one of the feelgood stories of the weekend as Callum Wilson scored a hat-trick following a lengthy injury layoff. Jon Turner, Steve Luckings and John McAuley discuss all of the big news from the Premier League and are joined on the phone by Andy Mitten who witnessed United's win at Old Trafford.

After a two-week break for international football, the Premier League returns, kicking off the weekend with the North London derby as sixth-place Arsenal host third-placed Tottenham Hotspur. Spurs start the game as slight favourites despite playing at the Emirates Stadium, but their record against the top clubs in the Premier League has been poor this season. A win for Arsenal will move them to within one point of their rivals and firmly in the hunt for a top-four place. The other big news is the return of David Moyes to Premier League management as the former Everton, Manchester United and Sunderland manager takes charge at West Ham United. Moyes, whose arrival at the London Stadium has been met with plenty of derision, is tasked with guiding 18th-placed West Ham to Premier League safety. His first assignment is a trip to Watford. In this week's Extra Time podcast, Jon Turner and Graham Caygill discuss the North London derby and Moyes' return before providing predictions for all 10 Premier League fixtures.

Arsene Wenger was left aggrieved at Manchester City’s 3-1 win at the Etihad Stadium on Sunday, claiming Raheem Sterling dived to win a penalty and that David Silva was clearly offside in the build-up to City’s third.

There can be no arguing with the Arsenal manager’s gripe with the offside decision; Silva was clearly offside when he received the ball before squaring to Gabriel Jesus to round off another emphatic City win. But our Premier League correspondent, Richard Jolly, who covered the game for us, says despite the Frenchman’s frustration City were worthy winners, with Kevin de Bruyne and Fernandinho in particular catching the eye with their energy and graft in midfield.

Joining Steve Luckings in the studio this week is sports editor Graham Caygill to discuss Antonio Conte laying down the law to defender David Luiz by omitting the Brazilian from the Chelsea side that saw off Manchester United at Stamford Bridge. After a week of unrest following the defeat to Roma, the Chelsea manager tackled another of his squad’s biggest characters head on and won. For now at least.

We’ll also look at Tottenham’s dogged determination to grind out three points against bottom club Crystal Palace four days after the high of destroying Real Madrid in the Uefa Champions League. There was a much-needed and morale-boosting win for Everton, who came from two goals down to beat Watford, and Sean Dyche continues to enhance his reputation as his Burnley side recorded another win on the road.

Jose Mourinho made sure he answered recent criticism by masterminding Manchester United's hard-fought win over Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. While there was plenty of reason for Mourinho to gloat, the result concluded a disappointing week for Tottenham and their manager Mauricio Pochettino. Manchester City maintained their five-point lead at the top of the table with victory at West Bromwich Albion to ensure the best start of any team in Premier League history. Champions Chelsea made sure they did not fall further behind City with an Eden Hazard-inspired win at Bournemouth, while there were wins for Arsenal, Liverpool, and Stoke City. Bottom side Crystal Palace claimed a late draw against West Ham United in the most dramatic game of the weekend, but there was more misery for struggling Everton at Leicester City.

Manchester City followed up their five-star showing against Liverpool to put five past Watford as Pep Guardiola's side continue to look like the team to beat in the Premier League title race. A goalless draw between Chelsea and Arsenal at Stamford Bridge was notable for another red card for the champions, while it has reached crisis point at Crystal Palace after another defeat set a new Premier League record. Newcastle United, meanwhile, have so far defied expectations and their latest win puts Rafa Benitez's team inside the top four. Jon Turner, Steve Luckings and John McAuley discuss all of this on this week's show before picking the stand-out players of the season so far and looking ahead to this weekend's action.

#PremierLeague #PL #EPL #Chelsea #MCFC #MUFC #ManCity #ManUnited #Newcastle #CrystalPalace

The first managerial sacking of the 2017/18 Premier League season took place on Monday as Frank De Boer departed Crystal Palace after four games, four defeats and no goals. On the pitch, there was plenty of drama as Manchester City demolished 10-man Liverpool in the first game of the weekend, with Belgian midfielder Kevin De Bruyne pulling all the strings for Pep Guardiola's side. Champions Chelsea picked up another win, this time at Leicester City, while Manchester United saw their perfect start end at Stoke City. On this week's show, Jon Turner, Steve Luckings and John McAuley offer their thoughts on the latest action after Richard Jolly conferences in from England to discuss De Boer's sacking.

#PremierLeague #CrystalPalace #ManUnited #Chelsea #Arsenal #ManCity #MCFC #LFC #CFC #Liverpool #FCB #Barcelona #ChampionsLeague

The summer transfer window closed last week as a late flurry of business saw clubs rush to buy players in the closing stages. However, Manchester City's protracted pursuit of Alexis Sanchez ended in disappointment after Arsenal failed to secure a deal in time for Thomas Lemar, while Chelsea faced multiple rejections before pushing through deals for Danny Drinkwater and Davide Zappacosta. There were plenty of other eye-catching signings completed although Philippe Coutinho leaving Liverpool wasn't one of them. In this week's show, Jon Turner, Steve Luckings and John McAuley discuss the best and the worst of the transfer window, and Andy Mitten joins us on the phone to discuss Barcelona's failure to land Coutinho. We also look ahead to the weekend when the Premier League returns after the international break.

#PremierLeague #Chelsea #Arsenal #ManCity #MCFC #LFC #CFC #Liverpool #FCB #Barcelona #TransferNews

Episode 4: The third round of Premier League fixtures offered plenty to ponder ahead of the two-week break for international football. Arsenal's humiliating defeat to Liverpool on Sunday stole most of the headlines as the pressure on manager Arsene Wenger continues to build. Chelsea produced an accomplished display to defeat Everton at Stamford Bridge to offer a reminder of their title credentials, while Manchester City were late winners at Bournemouth in late, dramatic style. For Manchester United it proved another encouraging weekend, and as the only team with the perfect start, Jose Mourinho's side head the table. Jon Turner, Steve Luckings and Graham Caygill discuss all the weekend action in the studio and are joined on the phone by Premier League correspondent Richard Jolly from England.

#PremierLeague #Arsenal #Liverpool #Chelsea #MUFC #ManchesterUnited #ManUnited #ManCity #MCFC #ManchesterCity
