In 1986 Richard went to Westerham in Kent and spent approx six months as a daytime help for a young man called Tim who had suffered a spinal injury and was a quadriplegic.
He and his family lived in a pub in the town and Richard helped him in his day to day routine supporting him in being independent at home, either working an early in the day shift or a late shift. This could involve helping Tim wash, get up, dress, go out and about, general day to day tasks and preparing for bed.
Richard's second placement was in 1989 when he went to Stockport for a year to work in an intermediate treatment centre with young offenders. Richard worked on the community remand scheme as part of a team supporting young offenders while they awaited their appearance in court or as part of their sentence.
Following this work Richard enrolled on a youth work course at Manchester Poly.
