Marjorie Anderson

Episode 602,   Dec 06, 2012, 11:27 PM

Her voice was, at its best, quite simply, impeccable. Those clipped RP tones, pan-fried with a dash of mischief. It’s not surprising that she received thousands of letters.

Marjorie Anderson was one of a group of women thrust onto on-air duties on the BBC General Forces programme in the hope that their comforting tones would cheer the troops. She went on to host Forces Favourites and its successor, Family Favourites, on the BBC Light Programme. She is maybe best remembered as a presenter of early, scripted, editions of Woman's Hour from 1958 until 1972.

Marjorie died in 1999, aged 86.
