Celebrating 150 Years of the Tube

A hundred fifty years ago, London was by far the biggest city in the world. Its narrow streets were overcrowded. Its transport system was non existent. Engineers decided the solution was an underground railway..and so on the 9th of January 1863, the first tube journey kickstarted a revolution in transport that is still being felt around the world. So how has the development of the tube changed the character and shape of London? And can new, ambitious transport projects generate the same kind of economic benefits that those Victorian engineers promised back in 1863?
