Approaching the age of 75 and at times in indifferent health, Britain's most senior Roman Catholic Cleric Cardinal Keith O'Brien said he had tendered his resignation as archbishop of St Andrews and Edinburgh to #Pope Benedict XVI some months ago. Today though we heard that Pope Benedict had decided that the resignation should take effect immediately. Cardinal O'Brien has chosen to relinquish his place in the conclave to choose Benedict's successor meaning #Britain will be unrepresented in the election of a new pontiff. John Haldane is a Professor of #Philosophy at St Andrews University and a #Vatican advisor.
