Dr Luke Alderwick - Predictor Podcast (Ep67) - Tuberculosis and drug discovery
What will happen when bacteria become even more resistant to drugs and the current treatments won’t work? Sam talks to Dr Luke Alderwick, Director of the Drug Discovery Centre and Lecturer in Biosciences at the University of Birmingham. Luke’s research aims to understand the biology of mycobacterium tuberculosis, the causative agent of most TB in humans. He explains how the Drug Discovery Centre goes about developing a drug, and why it's so important that academic drug discovery continues alongside commercial drug companies. Luke explains the future of drug development could involve ‘making use of bacterial viruses called bacteriophages or ‘phages’, which are viruses that infect and destroy certain bacteria'. The success or failure of such developments will have a major impact on healthcare worldwide.
