What it means to be safe - Ideas Lab Podcast

Aug 12, 2013, 09:15 AM

Whether it’s the dark, terrorism or the group of hoodies hanging out on the street corner, everyone's scared of something, but our fears are rarely in proportion to the actual threat. Dr Yan Wong hosts a panel of experts to discuss what it means to be safe. In reality each year in the UK far more people drown in the bath than are killed by terrorism. But if its our perception that's the problem, who's responsible for tackling it?

On the panel is Phil Loach, Deputy Chief Fire Officer at West Midlands Fire Service, and Austin Rodrigues, Safer Places Officer for Birmingham South Community Safety Team. From the University of Birmingham Yan is joined by Dr Chris Allen, lecturer in Social Policy from the Institute of Applied Social Studies, and Dr Danielle Beswick, Lecturer in the School of Government and Society.
