Paul Martin's Business Update - November 1st

Saskatchewan workers continue to enjoy the second highest average pay packet in the nation. This is the fourth consecutive month we’ve held that standing.

But, while we are still holding that spot, the size of the monthly increases is shrinking. That could be a result of less overtime or it just might be a softening of the labor market as the size of the workforce begins to catch up to demand. Most observers in the business community are leaning towards the first as the correct answer: less over time.

The monthly tabulation of pay and hours of work is slightly different than the monthly jobs numbers because the information is collected in a different manner. This comes from tax as well as payroll information from employers. The job numbers come from a survey of workers.

And both these show a trend towards continued expansion of the workforce in the province and little in the way of decreased demand for talent as the number of people on payrolls in this assessment rose by more than 8,000 in the last year.
