Adulthood & Entrepreneurs - Part 5

Jan 27, 2014, 12:22 PM

Throughout the week on BBC World Service's Newshour we've been exploring the concept of 'Adulthood' and becoming a grownup. As part of this series I've been searching out 5 young entrepreneurs with different expertise and from different parts of the world. Part 5 we meet social entrepreneur Ilwad Elman. She was born in Somalia and raised in Canada. She returned to Mogadishu in 2009 when she was 19. It was only meant to be a holiday to visit her mum who had returned in 2007 to continue the work of her and her husband who was assassinated in 1996. On that short visit Ilwad Elman found she could make a difference and she decided to stay in Mogadishu. She now makes a living from trying to help people in Somalia with different initiatives - from helping victims of sexual violence to helping with vocational skills for former child soldiers to helping get grants so people can start their own businesses.
