Paul Martin's Business Update - April 1st, 2014

One of those economic indicators that is as much a political as business metric is head offices, more specifically how many head offices you have in your province.

StatsCan has just released its 2012 evaluation of head office impact in the country and, on this chart, Saskatchewan is holding its own. We held the number of major head offices from 2011, something not all provinces including Alberta were able to do.

Head offices in this study have a fairly narrow definition but generally are larger enterprises – including Crown Corporations – that have multiple locations. We have 94 companies that qualify. Alberta has 400. Canada has 2800.

Not surprisingly the largest percentage of both companies and head offices employees are housed in Ontario. This is a fairly lopsided nation on this measure with Quebec holding second spot and then Alberta and BC. In fact those four account for pretty much all the head offices in the country. But interestingly Alberta is gradually gaining in importance, now having surpassed Quebec in numbers of head office employees as economic power ever so slowly shifts West ward.
