The Zero Vision Tool platform is of primary importance in order to allow access to all authorities that can impact our project," says Ragnar Johansson, Swedish Orient Line (SOL), one of the participants in JIP SIC and Pilot Scrubber. Ragnar Johansson, Swedish Orient Line. Which JIP is your organisation involved in? - Pilot Scrubber. The aim of this JIP is to try to develop a scrubber that is different to the conventional one. The conventional scrubber is heavy, takes up a lot of space and requires large quantities of water on board. What we are aiming for is something much simpler, and smaller in terms of both weight and volume. Which other organisations are involved in this? - In addition to Swedish Orient Line there is Stora Enso, which supervises both cargo and vessels for the exact vessel we are considering, Transatlantic, which operates the vessels, Wagenborg Shipping from the Netherlands, which operates a different type of vessel that is also relevant, Ports of Sweden, Swedish Agency for Marine and Water Management, Swedish Shipowners’ Association and SSPA. Some of the work started by JIP SIC resulted in Pilot Scrubber, involving several partners. What do you consider to be the most important aspect of this work? - The aim of the project is to learn and develop as well as to involve all partners with influence in the area of operations and scrubbers. And we have succeeded in this and have involved Ports of Sweden etc. plus …well I think that we have covered it all fairly well. What do you consider to be the advantages, if any, of being part of a project that is carried out using ZVT? - The Zero Vision Tool platform has established working methods in relation to communication towards the Swedish authorities and the EU Commission, which finance large parts of this project. This is good and makes everything much simpler for those of us working with this on a day-to-day basis. We also learn from the successes and failures of other JIP partners. Put simply, it is a learning experience and a well-established cooperation. As you are also one of the representatives for the Swedish Shipowners’ Association in ZVT, what is the most important aspect of these meetings, in your opinion? - The Zero Vision Tool platform is of primary importance in order to allow access to all authorities that can impact our project. And this is possible via the reference group in Zero Vision Tool, where all these authorities are available and where we can raise issues which require a decision from the authorities. Issues that we want them to investigate and which need to be investigated. And where everyone is sat around the same table, which is extremely powerful, and which I think is appreciated by all partners around the table, both the authorities and industry.
