Pt2. D Day from an 18yr old flight mechanic in Gloucestershire.

70 years ago today, thousands of Allied troops began landing on the beaches of Normandy in Northern France, in the push against the Germans during World War Two.

The assault involved well over 100,000 British, Canadian & US troops arriving from the sea. A further 23,000 were landed by air. . Alan Hartley, was an 18 year old mechanical engineer on the Dakota aeroplanes which took hundreds of men from an airbase in Gloucestershire.

Earlier we heard from Alan, he told us about his job, including him repainting Dakotas and the planes leaving capturing two important bridges. Siobhán Harrison asked him what the atmosphere was like on the morning itself . . . .
