Highland Guns Row: MSP John Finnie Talks to MFR News

Police Scotland's meeting Highland Council today to explain why officers armed with guns are being deployed to 'everyday' duties. It comes after the man in-charge of policing in the Highlands admitted the need for firearms officers could have been better explained to the public. Chief Superintendent told MFR a few days ago: "We have one or two vehicles on the road most of the time during the course of the day, with officers who are armed." "We arm officers so that they can respond to immediately to significant events. "I'm talking about people who may have firearms themselves, or weapons that can be so dangerous so that officers may need to have a gun to deal with the situation." Over the past few weeks, Highland MSP John Finnie has been vocal on the issue of police and guns: "The reasons behind the success of policing in the Highlands and Islands has been the level of community engagement and, quite simply, people are less likely to engage with an armed officer."
