Interview with Steve Boden Director of "Crazy For You" coming to The Belgrade Theatre
Broadway Spectacle Lights up the Belgrade
The spectacular musical “Crazy for You” is coming to the Belgrade Theatre this June, presented by the City’s award winning Coventry Musical Theatre Society.
The Tony and Olivier award winning musical features a score written by George and Ira Gershwin and a hilarious book by Ken Ludwig.
Suggested by the 1930 hit GIRL CRAZY, this "new" Gershwin musical is about a well-to-do young New Yorker, Bobby Child, who is sent to Nevada to foreclose on a theatre owned by the family business. Falling in love with the local postmistress, Bobby decides to produce a show to save the theatre. However, the path to true love isn’t as straight forward as he hoped, and on the way he encounters a collection of inept cow boys, beautiful follies girls, an irate hotel owner and a Broadway impresario, along with a host of other larger than life characters.
Society Chairman Andy Watts is delighted that the society is staging this production in Coventry. He says:
“Since the London production in the 1990’s, this has been a musical which we’ve been waiting to stage for a number of years. We now have a company with the musical and dancing ability to do the piece justice and I promise audiences will thoroughly enjoy this terrific show. This will be the sixth time we’ve performed at the Belgrade and this production will be our biggest and most spectacular yet!”
Playing the leading roles of Bobby Child and Polly Baker are Coventry couple Callum Roberts and Hannah Farquharson, well known to local audiences for their stage appearances in both musicals and pantomimes in Coventry and Leamington Spa. They are joined by another local performer Jamie Sheerman who plays the role of theatre impresario Bella Zangler and Claire Griggs who plays opposite Matt Everett as tourists Patricia and Eugene Fodor. Joining them is a company of forty singers and dancers and an orchestra of fourteen musicians under the direction of local Musical Director James Suckling. Chairman Andy Watts continues: “To stage one production at the Belgrade each year costs the society in the region of Fifty Thousand Pounds. None of the performers or technicians get paid, they do it for their own enjoyment and for the benefit of the local community. We employ a professional creative team and orchestra who we pay to work with us on each production. We receive no grant to help us stage our work and rely upon the support of the people of Coventry to come and buy a ticket to support this 103 year old city society.”
Tickets for Crazy for You start at only £12.25 if booked online and can be purchased through the box office at www.belgrade.co.uk. Alternatively you can call the theatre on 024 7655 3055.
