The Late Great Mark Whittaker broadcasts from Japan
Yesterday one of the BBC's most talented radio presenters died. Mark Whittaker was a wonderful writer with a great empathy for the people he interviewed. He presented and reported across nearly every BBC radio station - starting out at Radio Lancashire, moving to Newsbeat on Radio One, as well as presenting on Five Live and Radio Four. His most recent trip was to Japan for the World Service to report on the dramatic population decline in the Japanese countryside.
He took the train from Tokyo to the Seto inland Sea and on to the island of Shiraishi which has seen it's population halve in the last twenty years. One of 1800 communities that the Japanese government has forecast might vanish in a generation.
