Shia militias in Iraq: saviour or menace?

For many, the Shia militias in #Iraq could yet save their nation; to others these brigades of volunteers have grown ominously powerful during the life and death struggle against the insurgents of the #IslamicState. According to Amnesty International, the militias have been acting with complete impunity since answering the call to arms last June from the senior cleric Grand Ayatollah Ali Al Sistani. Militia volunteers have been accused of kidnapping westerners for money and of persecuting and murdering members of Iraqi's #Sunni minority. Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi, who took office last month, has admitted to previous 'excesses' by security forces but has blamed abuses on criminal elements within the militias rather than brigades on which he now relies so heavily.
