0034 The New Hijab

This is Randi Hacker with another Postcard from Abroad from the KU Centers for East Asian Studies and Global and International Studies.

It’s not quite on the runway yet but the hijab is definitely having its moment in fashion. The hijab is the head scarf worn by Muslim women in accordance with the tradition that women must cover everything except their hands and face. Photos of hijabs in the news often show somber colors and somber expressions. But young, tech-savvy Muslim women are so over the whole somber vibe. Not only are they wearing more colorful hijabs, they are also posting selfies on social media. Facebook and Instagram now boast photos of vibrant, smiling Muslim women wearing hijabs in the style of Audrey Hepburn with a scarf wrapped around her elegant head and neck. New hijab selfies are posted every day and some bloggers, like Yasemin Kanar, have 77,000 followers on Instagram. Hear that Miranda Priestly? Hijab as haute couture.

With thanks to Jennifer Duhamel for this text, from the KU Center for East Asian Studies, this is Randi Hacker. Wish you were here.
