Sir Malcolm Rifkind resigns

Foreign Secretary and Defence Secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind has held some of the most important ministerial positions. But earlier this week, his political career came to an abrupt end. Sir Malcolm announced he's stepping down as chairman of Parliament's Intelligence and Security Committee and also as a Conservative MP.

His decision came after he was secretly recorded apparently offering his services to a private Chinese firm for cash.

There's probably relief in both the Conservative and Labour camps that this episode can now be swiftly put in a file marked 'events we'd rather forget.' But with an election just weeks away, what is the electoral fall out likely to be?
