“Live as if you were to die tomorrow. Learn as if you were to live forever.” ― Mahatma Gandhi

This week marks the beginning of our third year for Scraponomics. If you had told me two years ago that I would be able to write 104 two-minute segments for 1320 WILS radio, it’s hard to say if I would have believed you. Many thanks to the entire team at WILS, particularly Lee Cohn for his confidence in Friedland to come up with new material every week, Andy Warnock for his masterful editing skills, Dave Akerly for his constant interest in our perspective, and of course, Ken MacDonald, the owner of MacDonald broadcasting, for believing a show about the economics of scrap-recycling could work.

We like to call our little corner on Center and Maple in Old Town, Lansing the College of Friedland because there’s always something to learn. I’ve heard multiple times that you can work at Friedland for 40 years and still learn something new every day. In hindsight, this may be the reason we’ve been able to come up with new material every week; there’s always something to say.

Our goal with Scraponomics has been to take common beliefs about recycling and unveil the economic and environmental realities that lay underneath. In our first two years, we hope we’ve given you, the public, a glimpse of the highs and lows that our industry faces. It just so happens that at the moment, the scrap industry is experiencing some difficult times. As for what this means for the future of the economy as a whole is yet to be seen, but our hope is that through it all, we can help provide another perspective.

Thanks for a wonderful two years of seeing just how far the rabbit hole goes in the scrap-recycling world. Here’s to digging even deeper in year three.
