Do You Want To Buy Some Cookies? - Two Minute Tuesday - 20160105

2016 will mark the 22nd consecutive year I’ve been involved in advertising sales. I have been awarded lots of trophys, plaques, and coasters by the companies I have sold for. I have a college degree in broadcast sales from Ball State University, one of the largest undergraduate communication colleges in the country— So, naturally, I know a thing or two about advertising and about sales. But this weekend I was schooled in the art of outside sales by my eight year old daughter. You see it is girl scout cookie time, and when my daughter looked over the prizes she could earn, she immediately zeroed in on what prize she wanted and didnt’ hesitate when she saw she would have to sell 750 boxes of cookies. 750 is 5 times more boxes than she sold last year. But she had determined her goal. After reaching out to the “low hanging fruit”…grandparents and aunts, uncles and getting some sales, she determined she would have to canvas the neighborhood going door to door. Kansas City temperatures are in the low 30’s right now, and theres still a lot of ice on driveways and porches. Her sales pitch is “Would you like to buy some girl scout cookies?” that’s it, nothing fancy, nothing “customized” for each house…After we had been out for a little while, I asked if she was ready to go back home…she said no…she just went to the next house. If someone was not home, she went to the next house. If someone answered the door and said “NO”, she just went to the next house. If there was a “no soliciting” sign, she went to the next house. When she fell on the ice she got up and went to the next house. Whether she knew who lived in the house or not, she knocked on the door. She did not stop. As someone who is always working to improve his sales game, I’m always reading, watching, or listening to sales training learning how to better manage and speed up my sales process. Now I understand that a $4 box of cookies from a cute young girl is a bit different than investing in a $5,000 a month marketing campaign from a 44 year old bald guy with glasses, but you know what? At the end of the day, she showed me…she taught me… that sales is all about “getting in front of the prospect and keep going…do not stop…the more people you see…the more cookies you can sell. “ I think her little lesson will make my 2016 much better. By the way, if you are interested in buying some girl scout cookies from her, please send me an email - jeremy.snider@cumulus.com
