ITMA Two

Episode 24,   Jul 08, 2011, 09:48 PM

ITMA (It's That Man Again) first aired on the BBC National Programme (also later on the Forces, Home, Light), starring Tommy Handley in topical comic situations amidst the War. It featured Colonel Chinstrap and Mrs. Mopp, and generated many catchphrases.   The title owed something to a Daily Express headline on Hitler.  A series of four fortnightly episodes was planned- although the series was to run until 1949.

Many catchphrases lived on for years - not least 'Can I do you now, Sir?', which my old man always used to say to much puzzlement from his Baby Boomer family.

"Will you please watch the ITMA script a little more closely with regard to dirt...on one or two occasions recently you have been overstepping the bounds. The ' stick it up ' gag last week was a case in point."  (BBC INTERNAL MEMO)
