South Sudan’s joining of the East African Community raises new hopes for the region in addressing today’s challenges, according to a Ugandan Diplomat.

Alex Birugi from the Ugandan Embassy in Juba says challenges facing the EAC shall be addressed through cooperation.

Birungi argues that member states shall be “judged harshly” if they fail to safeguard future interest of the region.

“The joining of South Sudan to the East African Community raises new hopes for the region in terms of addressing the challenges that face us today. We shall be judged harshly if we do not look at the future of this region with interest…” he said.

The East African Community last week announced admitting South Sudan as the sixth member of the Community
