The Sound of Sixteen

What is claimed as Ireland's first radio broadcast, though it's subject to some dispute, was made on the second day of the Easter Rising on 25 April 1916. A Morse Code message was sent from the Wireless School of Telegraphy in Sackville Street (now O'Connell Street) Dublin written by James Connelly and coded by David Burke that read: "Irish Republic declared in Dublin today. Irish troops have captured city and are in full possession. Enemy cannot move in city. The whole country rising". Here sound designer Jimmy Eadie talks to RTE's Neil Doherty about that historic broadcast. This is includes part of the soundscape (written by Eadie and Donal Dineen) and a recreation of that Morse message that was heard across Ireland on 37 radio stations to commemorate the centenary of the event.
