Trump Wants GM to Come Home from Mexico. @larry_kudlow, CNBC. Lou Ann Hammond, DrivingtheNation.com

Within hours, Ms. Barra called Mr. Trump and engaged in a "very positive and cordial" lengthy conversation, according to two people familiar with the call. The 55-year-old CEO is no stranger to political conflict, having steered GM through a safety-recall crisis shortly after taking the helm in 2014, and the discussion "went very well," one of the people said.

A GM spokesman declined to comment on the conversation. Mr. Trump's transition team didn't return a request for comment.

As Ms. Barra and a group of other top auto executives gather in Detroit for the city's annual auto show, the growing tension between Mr. Trump and the industry's march toward globalization overshadows the stream of new vehicles being announced. The president-elect said GM's Chevrolet imports from Mexico should be charged a "big border tax," and has also criticized Ford Motor Co. and Toyota Motor Corp.

Toyota President Akio Toyoda will address journalists at a reveal Monday of important products, including a revamped version of the strong-selling Camry. It is unclear if he has spoken to Mr. Trump or will take questions from the media. Ford Chairman Bill Ford is also expected to be on hand -- he has twice discussed strategy changes with Mr. Trump, including scrapping a $1.6 billion small-car factory in Mexico.
