THREE CHEERS

I find it ironic that the colors red, white, and blue stand for freedom, until they're flashing behind you.

What’s so funny about this? Have you ever been pulled over by the police? It can be a pretty humiliating experience. My wife is a big fan of the TV show “Cops”, and this is the main thing that happens on the show. People are pulled over for minor infractions such as not stopping for a stop sign, having a broken tail light, etc. Invariably, it turns out that they’re either drug dealers, stone junkies, have a bunch of felony warrants, or the car is stolen. They never seem to have licenses, registrations, or proof of insurance. These are the incidents that are broadcast on the show. I’m sure they edit out all the legitimate folks who have their id’s and just didn’t know their signal light wasn’t working. After all, how boring would that be? No one wants to watch that. In the joke we have a couple who are about to be stopped by the police, as evidenced by the flashing lights behind them; if there were audio, I’m sure we’d hear the sirens too. The guy makes an observation about the irony of the colors red, white and blue signifying freedom except when those colors are coming from flashing lights on top of a police car which has just pulled you over. This joke pertains to American culture and refers to the colors of the US flag, namely red white and blue. Those growing up in this culture are taught that the flag and its colors represent truth, justice and freedom, our most important values (at least until the current President was elected). Remember that irony expresses meaning by using language that normally signifies the opposite, typically for humorous or emphatic effect. So the driver expects that despite these colors, he’s about to lose his freedom. That’s probably because of the crack cocaine he has stashed under the passenger seat in hopes that if they’re stopped his girlfriend will be the one arrested and not him. And THAT’s what’s so funny!
