"WASHINGTON— Neil Gorsuch’s confirmation by the Senate on Friday will restore a conservative majority on the Supreme Court that dates back more than 40 years, and it gives Republicans a hard-nosed victory after unprecedented political wrangling over the court’s direction.

The Senate’s 54-45 vote closed the book on more than a year of uncertainty over the high court’s future after Justice Antonin Scalia’s unexpected death in February last year left it split evenly between liberals and conservatives. The vacancy, spanning two presidential administrations, was the longest since the Civil War era.

As President Donald Trump’s first appointee to the Supreme Court, Judge Gorsuch, at the relatively young age of 49, is likely to put his mark on the court for decades, helping shape constitutional law and playing a key role in some of the biggest legal questions of the day.
