Listen with Mother & Narrative

Episode 312,   Jan 15, 2012, 06:58 PM

'Listen with Mother' was a programme of stories and nursery rhymes for children under 5. It was first heard on 16 January 1950 on what was then the 'Light' programme (now Radio 2), before moving to Radio 4.

Like you maybe, I remember it well. Huddled round the Rediffusion speaker in the corner of the infant school classroom, sat cross legged on the parquet flooring. The programe was aired just after lunch, where it attracted an audience of more than a million at its peak.

Each story within programme was famously prefaced with the phrase: 'Are you sitting comfortably? Then I'll begin'. The theme music was the Berceuse from Gabriel Fauré's 'Dolly Suite' for piano duet, Op. 56.

The show ended in 1982. #radio
