Catalan president baulks at new election, maintaining tensions

The president of the Spanish region of Catalonia, Carles Puigdemont has ruled out holding a new regional election. The move could have cooled the ongoing tensions with Spain's government. Mr Puigdemont had been expected to call the poll to head off moves by the Spanish government to take direct control of the autonomous region.
