The 2017 APEC has concluded in Da Nang, Vietnam. President Donald Trump gave a spirited airing of his "America First" doctrine in a speech to Asia-Pacific leaders on last Friday, vowing his country will "no longer tolerate" unfair trade, closed markets and intellectual property theft, as he seeks to rewrite the rules of global commerce. Again, his Chinese counterpart President Xi Jingping preached the value of globalization and called for more open, more inclusive, more balanced, more equitable and more beneficial to all. Meanwhile, trade ministers from 11 Pacific Rim countries including Australia have finally reached a deal to proceed with the free-trade Trans-Pacific Partnership deal, despite Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau did not attend a summit of TPP leaders and caused gloomy sentiment on this trade deal. May be there was too many issues to discuss and the South China Sea was no longer under the spotlight. Mr Xue Xiaoming, PhD candidate on International Relations, takes a look at what happened in Da Nang.
