Meet Iranian-born multimedia artist Samira Hodaei as she takes us into her studio for a discussion about her life, work and her preparations for an exciting new project ‘Cinema Europa’, which opened this May at Berlin’s Kunstlerhaus Bethanien, in association with ORYX FOUNDATION Switzerland.

‘Cinema Europa’, an installation piece in which Hodaie recreates a derelict cinema hall in Tehran, and decorates it with portraits of a possible audience, executed in her trademark style. The longing, the sense of loss and abandonment suffuses the work with a marked nostalgia for bygone times and pointed allusions to an era of social freedoms and individual agency.

In our meeting, Hodaei reveals the inspiration for this project, her thoughts on Tehran, art and life - and her least favorite questions from journalists!
