Tom Joscelyn, Long War Journal and FDD; and Bill Roggio, Long War Journal and FDD; in re: AQIM CLAIMS TUAREG YOUTH KILLED IN US AIRSTRIKE
Al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb has released a statement claiming that the victims of an American airstrike on Nov. 29 “were a group of Tuareg youth” and not members of the organization. US Africa Command previously said that 11 AQIM “terrorists” were killed and three vehicles destroyed in the “precision airstrike near Al Uwaynat, Libya.” AQIM has spent a lot of time creating liens with Tuareg. Are France and Italy helping the US in this? Not clear, with secrecy being a possible reason. In Somalia, several hundred US Special Forces operating with local Somali forces. The US has launched over three dozen strikes against Shebaab this year. US forces are called “advisors.”
