Aden is a greatcentre for native shipping, and the dhows and buggalows thatsail every year from the Persian Gulf to Yemen and Jiddahalway call at Aden en route. Also from Oman and Hadramautthe modern Sinbads run their craft into Aden to exchangeproduce or to lay in supplies for their voyages to the coast ofAfrica. The distance from Aden to Yemens old capital, Sana isnearly 200 miles in a direct line, but on my second journeythither, in 1894, I was obliged to take a roundabout journeyto Taiz, because of an Arab uprising.
