This week I we are the annual Invasion Day March in Sydney on the 26th January 2020.
The 26th January is celebrated by many as the founding day of Australia, the day Captain Cook first ‘discovered’ the nation. However, in recent years there has been a growing unease with this name. For many it is a day of mourning, the day 267 years old Indigenous genocide began.
I spoke to Aboriginal tribal elders, spokespeople and campaigners who explained why this day is so painful for them and about the inequality and prejudices Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people face.
As part of this, we hear from a grieving mother about her son’s death in custody.
This is a very pofwerful and emotional episode which discussed topics some listeners may find upsetting.
